Prophylaxis is the routine professional cleaning that removes the plaque and tartar your toothbrush can’t. For most patients, it’s the foundation of long-term oral health.
What happens during a cleaning
Our hygienists use gentle ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments to remove plaque and tartar. We polish your teeth, floss every contact, and finish with fluoride if appropriate. The whole visit usually takes 45 to 60 minutes.
Routine vs. periodontal cleaning
Routine prophylaxis cleans above the gumline. If you have gum disease (periodontitis), we may recommend deeper periodontal maintenance — see our periodontal maintenance page for what's involved.
