Choosing a dentist
How to Choose the Right Dentist
What to look for, what to ask, and what should send up red flags.
Choosing a dentist is a real decision — and the right fit varies. Here’s how we’d evaluate any practice, including our own.
What actually matters
Diagnostic care: does the dentist take time to explain what they see and why? Comprehensive capability: how much can they do in-house vs. refer out? Transparent pricing: do you get a real estimate before treatment begins? Comfort: do you actually feel comfortable in the chair? Reviews: what do existing patients say (especially the long-term ones)?
Questions worth asking
What do you do in-house vs. refer out? What’s your average wait for an emergency appointment? Do you accept my insurance? Do you have payment plans or financing? What sedation options do you offer? Will the same dentist see me each visit?
Red flags
Pressure to commit to large treatment plans immediately. Diagnoses that contradict everything you’ve heard from prior dentists. Inconsistent pricing. Reluctance to give itemized estimates. High staff turnover (often a sign of practice culture issues). Outdated technology (silver fillings as a default, paper records, etc.).
