Post-procedure care
Home Instructions
Care guides for after fillings, extractions, root canals, crowns, and more.
After most procedures, what you do at home affects how well you heal. Below are general guidelines — but always follow the specific instructions Dr. Campbell or your hygienist gave you.
After a filling or crown prep
Numbness lasts 2 to 4 hours. Avoid chewing on that side until the numbness wears off (you can bite yourself without feeling it). Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal. If pain worsens after 3 days, call us.
After an extraction
Bite firmly on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes. No spitting, rinsing, smoking, or drinking through a straw for 24 hours — these dislodge the clot and can cause dry socket. Cold compress for swelling. Soft foods for a couple of days.
After a root canal
Tenderness for several days is normal. Take ibuprofen if needed. Avoid chewing on the tooth until the permanent crown is placed. Call us if pain worsens or swelling appears.
After scaling and root planing
Gums may feel sore and a little swollen for a couple of days. Warm salt water rinses help. Mild sensitivity to cold is normal and improves.
